Pakistan and China reaffirmed their commitment on Tuesday to enhance strategic cooperation in key sectors such as economy, investment, and regional connectivity.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang arrived in Pakistan for a four-day visit, marking the first visit by a Chinese premier in 11 years. His visit comes ahead of the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting, scheduled for October 15-16. During his stay, Li Qiang has engaged in key discussions with Pakistani leadership, aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation.
In a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Gwadar International Airport was virtually inaugurated, a project hailed as a “gift” from China to Pakistan. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expediting projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Prime Minister Shehbaz also assured Premier Li of a thorough investigation into the recent terror attack near Karachi’s airport, which resulted in casualties, including a Chinese national.
President Asif Ali Zardari hosted Li Qiang at the President’s House, where both sides emphasized deepening ties and accelerating CPEC development. President Zardari expressed condolences over the loss of Chinese nationals in terrorist attacks and reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to protecting Chinese workers in the country. He stressed Pakistan’s unwavering friendship with China, which remains central to its foreign policy.
Li Qiang praised Pakistan as a reliable partner, emphasizing that China would continue supporting its neighbor on issues of territorial integrity and sovereignty. He acknowledged the contributions of President Zardari in fostering strong bilateral ties. Both leaders underscored the importance of expanding economic, investment, and regional connectivity partnerships.
Additionally, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq met with the Chinese premier, emphasizing the need for closer collaboration in energy, technology, and the digital economy. Premier Li supported enhanced parliamentary exchanges to further solidify the China-Pakistan relationship.
This visit highlights the enduring strategic partnership between the two nations, with a focus on advancing CPEC projects and deepening economic cooperation.
