Germany Honors Biden for Strengthening Trans-Atlantic Ties Ahead of US Election

Published:

On Friday, Germany honored U.S. President Joe Biden for his dedication to strengthening trans-Atlantic relations, awarding him the nation’s highest class of the Order of Merit. This recognition came just ahead of Biden’s meeting with European allies to discuss key issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The prestigious award was presented by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who acknowledged Biden’s role in restoring Europe’s hope in the trans-Atlantic alliance. He referenced the strained relations during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s term, noting how Biden “literally overnight” rejuvenated the partnership between the U.S. and Europe.

Biden, who has championed international cooperation throughout his presidency, emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine, asserting that the collective effort must endure until a “just and durable peace” is achieved. He also underlined the need for strong alliances in the face of growing global challenges.

The visit, Biden’s first bilateral trip to Germany as president, occurs just weeks before the U.S. presidential election, raising concerns among European leaders about the potential shift in U.S. foreign policy if Trump returns to power. Trump has previously expressed a willingness to impose tariffs on key allies and voiced indifference to NATO’s mutual defense commitments. Despite this, Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, rejected the idea that Biden was trying to “Trump-proof” foreign policy, focusing instead on solidifying long-term commitments.

Later in the day, Biden met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as strategic responses to China and advancements in technology and energy.
